Out of the quarrel with others we make rhetoric; out of the quarrel with ourselves we make poetry. ~W.B. Yeats

When blogs suffer for big things…

Hey there few, but loyal, Poetry Challenge challenge followers. We are back from blog hiatus to announce some exciting going-ons. Part of the reason for delay on the next poetry challenge is that Christine was given the opportunity to teach a Creative Writing Course for the permanent-housing-challenged in Dallas. Works from this interesting and talented crowd of writers will definitely be posted from time to time. Check out the poster!

Also, exciting news for Al who has signed to an independent record label in Ontario!! And since most of Al’s writing becomes transformed into song form, check out his stuff. “Sparks in the Grass”…#5 on the sampler

POST OF SHAME.

Writing is an act of hope. It means carving order out of chaos, of challenging one’s own beliefs and assumptions, of facing the world with eyes and heart wide open. Through writing we declare a personal identity amid faceless anonymity. We find purpose and beauty and meaning even when the rational mind argues that none of these exist.
Writing therefore, is also an act of courage. How much easier is it to lead an unexamined life than to confront yourself on the page?

Conversations With Dave

Christine: I’m reading The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath

Dave: Who is Sylvia Plath?

Christine: She is a well known confessional poet who killed herself.

Dave: How did she do it?

Christine: She stuck her head in the oven.

Dave: [After long pause] That seems like a really painful and inefficient way to off yourself.

Christine: [Sigh] Yep…just stuck her head in the oven and cooked herself like a turkey…even made sure she basted herself every thirty minutes.

Dave: [Confused Frown]
